First Aid for Cats

July 10th, 2009

Cats may fall ill or meet with an accident at anytime unexpectedly. In such times, there may not be enough time for you to take it to your nearest vet so it is important as an owner to know basic first aid to treat your cats on an urgent basis.

For this reason it is esential to equip yourself with first aid knowledge for your cats as some illness may prove deadly if left untreated in emergencies. Here are some of the common emergency illness/injuries and ways to treat them.

If your cat breaks its bone in an accident, it is not recommended that you set the broken bone yourself. What you need to do in this situation is stop the bleeding with ice or cold water and take it to the vet for treatment.

Choking is also a common issue with cats. In this case, open its mouth gently withour tilting her head backwards and see if you can see the object. You can remove the object if it is visible with a tweezer but make sure you dont push the object in as it will aggravate the situation. You can hold her upside down and press on her chest using your hands. If you can or cant remove the object, it is still best to take it to the vet afterwards to be on the safe side.

Some cats like to bite electric wires and so getting electrocuted is also a serious issue. It may produce burns on her tongue or palate in her mouth. Remember never to touch your cat if it is still touching an exposed electric wire. Turn of the current first and then pull your cat out with a wooden stick and take her to the vet immediately.

Lastly if your cat encounters eye injury and it’s eyes start bleeding, just wipe the blood with a wet cloth. Stop your cat from rubbing it’s eyes and dont apply any medicine without consulting a vet first.

These are just some of the basic first aid knowledge that cat owners need to be aware of and with some basic first aid supplies, it may prevent your cat’s injuries from being deadly.
